Tiger Woods lost sleep over Trump assassination attempt
Tiger Woods didn’t sleep Saturday night. The 15-time major champion said Tuesday he was glued to a screen, watching for updates on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. “We weren’t in the right mentality and didn’t get much out of it. It was a long night and that’s all we were looking at coming here,” Woods told BBC Sport. “I didn’t sleep a wink on the plane and ended up at the golf course.”
After a bullet grazed his right ear, President Trump posted on social media that he was “OK.” Authorities say the gunman also shot and killed bystander Corey Comperator, 50. Mr Woods, who is in Scotland for the British Open this week, has previously played golf with Mr Trump. The former president awarded Mr. Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019. The legendary golfer has refused to publicly discuss his relationship with Trump.
“Well, he’s the president of the United States,” Woods said in 2019. “You have to respect the office. It doesn’t matter who holds that position, whether you like or dislike the personality or the policies, but we all have to respect that position.”
Woods is scheduled to tee off at 9:37 a.m. ET on Thursday at the British Open along with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
