After Charley Hull’s round Friday, a buddy of hers could have sworn that she narrowly missed the water on her tee shot on Sahalee’s 17th hole. The pond had dampened a lot of golf balls that day, but Hull’s approach hit the center of the green with no mid-flight fright.

Still, when she got to the 17th during the Women’s PGA Championship Saturday — after using the previous 16 holes to move from 1-under par to 4 under — all she could think about was that conversation.

“I got in the tee box, and I was thinking ‘I never nearly hit in the water. I never nearly hit it in the water, and I just thought about the water,” said Hull, whose tee shot Saturday went straight in the drink en route to a triple bogey. “I’m human.”

This golf course has a tendency to be unkind to humans. It’ll take your legs out the second you think you may have solved it.

Hull herself said that before the 17th she “couldn’t do one thing wrong,” and got to within one stroke of the lead. But now she finds herself six back … and she has been anything but the lone victim this week.
