Rory McIlroy’s U.S. Open Collapse Has Fans Blaming Unexpected Culprits

That’s the last time PGA Tour veteran Rory McIlroy won a major championship.

He came close – perhaps as close as he’s been in the past decade – on Sunday at the 2024 U.S. Open. Up by two shots on the back nine at Pinehurst No. 2, McIlroy’s putter unfortunately went ice cold down the stretch, missing two putts inside four feet on the 70th and 72nd holes of the championship.

The final result? A disappointing solo second-place finish for McIlroy.

It’s been easy to target McIlroy’s putting as the reason for his collapse on Sunday, however, that’s not the only thing fans believe needs improvement going forward.

Some in the golf world are now calling for McIlroy to change caddies.

McIlroy, notably, replaced longtime caddie J.P. Fitzgerald with his childhood friend Harry Diamond in 2017. He won all four of his majors with Fitzgerald on the bag.

“Rory also needs a proper caddie who will help him not just a mate carrying the bag. That 7 iron into the par three was too much club. Get Steve Williams mate,” another fan said.

“Change of Caddie is needed, Rory,” another fan wrote.

“It’s definitely not Harry Diamond’s fault Rory McIlroy didn’t win the US Open BUT He may have a better chance of winning a major with a new, more vocal, caddie,” Paul argued.

McIlroy announced Monday that he’ll be taking a few weeks off before the Scottish Open and Open Championship later this summer.
