Rory McIlroy suddenly resigns from the PGA Tour and explains whyRory McIlroy submitted his resignation to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and the board of directors on Tuesday night.Jack Mirko Jack Mirko has been playing golf since he was five years old. He still needs to record a hole in one, but has obtained a master’s degree of sports journalism at Bonaba University.
RORY MAKILRA resigned as a PGA tour policy at the end of Tuesday, the day after the tour was given a bucket -bucket -bucket in Florida. The news came as a shock, as McIlroy has been the face of the PGA Tour for the past few years.”McIlroy’s resignation letter (which he sent to the full board late last night) makes clear that this difficult decision was made due to professional and personal commitments,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in an email to tour members. MondayQ (X @acaseofthegolf1). “Given the extraordinary time and effort that Lawrie and all of his fellow player directors have put into the Tour during a time of unprecedented change in our history, we certainly understand and respect his decision to retire to focus on the game and his family.”Monday’s meeting at PGA Tour headquarters covered a number of topics, including ongoing negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is the beneficiary of LIV Golf.
The board also discussed the possibility of alternative investors, such as Fenway Sports Group, and the concept of players receiving shares in a new for-profit entity that would oversee professional golf. But it seemed McIlroy either didn’t like what he heard or was simply tired. Over the past few years, the Northern Irishman has led a campaign for the PGA Tour to champion its cause while criticizing the Saudi-backed LIV golf chain. But on June 7, the day after Monahan announced the framework agreement with PIF, McIlroy admitted he had been the “sacrificial lamb” after feeling stabbed in the back by tour officials at the time in the wake of golf’s great split. But McIlroy now seems adamant that he intends to continue with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund’s investment.”Our competitive environment seems to me to be fragmented right now. I’d rather see everyone in it together,” McIlroy said, according to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports.
“I think that’s what’s best for golf… I hope that as we go through this process, the PIF will be involved in a framework agreement. Obviously, other suitors have been involved, offering their services and assistance. But once all this is over, we sincerely hope that the PIF will be involved and we can bring golf back.Reports have said that talks between the PGA Tour and the PIF are likely to extend beyond December 1st into 2024. 31, 2023, due date described within the framework of the framework agreement. As for McILroy, his resignation leaves a vacant position on the PGA Tour Policy Board.
That leaves Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Webb Simpson and Charlie Hoffman.”Per PGA Tour tournament rules, if a Player Director position becomes vacant due to a resignation, the remaining Player Directors will select a successor to serve the remainder of the player’s term,” Monahan added in an email. “(McIlroy’s) term ends at the end of 2024.
“It remains to be seen who will replace McIlroy, but whoever it is, they will play a key role in determining the future of professional golf.In the meantime, McIlroy plans to take a step back to focus on his game and his family. Jack Mirko is golf editor for SB Nation’s Playing Through magazine.
