Major champion Xander Schauffele slams Jon Rahm: “You think too highly of yourself”
Major winner Xander Schauffele says Jon Rahm may have overestimated his impact when he left the PGA Tour to join the LIV Golf League.
Xander Schauffele took a well-deserved break after winning his first major before returning. What’s more, it’s fair to say the 30-year-old American doesn’t hold back when asked how he feels on a range of subjects.
In a fiery interview with The London Times ahead of the Memorial Tournament, Schaufel totally trashed PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan. The PGA Championship winner criticized Monahan for shying away from the spotlight over the past two years and relying on big-name athletes to spearhead his attacks on powerful golf rival LIV.
Schauffele has now turned his attention to Rahm, suggesting the Spaniard had exaggerated his potential influence over the outcome of golf’s “civil war.”
Undoubtedly, Rahm’s choice to join LIV for an estimated £450 million ($566.4 million) was facilitated by his 2023 Masters victory.
Additionally, he joined the breakaway six months after the PGA Tour and LIV’s Saudi backers came to a “framework agreement.”
Rahm expressed this belief before he even tried to defend the green jacket, believing that his choice would have accelerated the negotiations. Since then, he has regretted missing out on some PGA Tour events, but still considers himself a competitor.
There’s only one golfer Schauffele believes can make that kind of impact. Shafele pointed out: “I can think of a guy who really moved the needle, it still plays.”
Despite the fact that he only agrees four or five times a year, I think this guy is of great importance.
Honestly, “guys who think that one person will do it all faster, probably thinks a little (Ly) themselves.”
Before everyone can shake their hands and move on, according to Shaufel, “there are many things that should arise that people do not realize”.
“It seems that we have been in this waste for a few years, but only a year has passed,” he said, saying how much damage has been caused in such a short time. “It seems like centuries have passed.
Eventually things will work out and everyone will have to come to an agreement, but it may take some time. Schauffele also offered his prediction for when this might happen:
