Cameron Young threatens 58, shoots 11-under 59 at Travelers Championship
Cameron Young prepares to hit a shot from the 17th tee during the third round of the Travelers Championship.
Given how easily PGA Tour players have been beating TPC River Highlands, it only seemed like a matter of time before they recorded another historic round at Cromwell, Connecticut. And that certainly happened during the third round of the Travelers Championship on Saturday. Cameron Young started well, going 5-under through the first four holes with two eagles and seven birdies, and the 27-year-old New Yorker moved into a tie with an 11-under par 59 on the par-70 course, becoming just the 12th player in history to win with a round under 60. Young’s round was highlighted by a spectacular eagle putt on the par-4 15th, where he drove 280 yards to the green and put himself within four feet of the cup for eagle-2. After a 5.5-foot birdie on the 17th, Young had a chance to match Jim Furyk’s 58-foot putt at the 2016 Travelers, but his putt missed the mark and he ended up with a 9-foot, 7-inch putt. . Shot under par in the circuit’s general classification, 13th out of 59. “I didn’t really think much about it in the middle with nine defenders…It just seemed to start after 10, 11, 12,” Young said. “Yeah, all of a sudden I was shooting 18 for 59, and it was just unbelievable. “These have been great two days,” Young added later. “The golf has been really good. In terms of achievements in life, I think there’s one that comes even further for me, and that’s the day you lose a million. That’s pretty cool and I’m grateful that my name is on this very short list, but there are entire tournaments I’ve played in…I’d probably rank it higher.
Only two courses in the history of the circuit have had players lose at least one round under 60: River Highlands and Old White TPC (59s by Stuart Appleby and Kevin Chappell). This is the tour’s first round under 60 since Scottie Scheffler shot 59 at TPC Boston in 2020. Young opened up a 72-66 lead with 59 dives and moved up 42 spots on the leaderboard to take first place among players 13 and under. There was no standing by the end of the day. Birds were No. 8 and 9, and Young shot 28 at Front 9, but the following five made one bird. However, he returned to the right track with a birdie at the age of 17 with a 15 -year -old eagle.
