Tiger Woods’ dream has finally come true: “Rory McIlroy is banned from the PGA due to unforeseen circumstances”…more details below.
This is his first public statement since it was revealed he had filed for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll. The 35-year-old was on press duties on Wednesday ahead of this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla.
The second major of the season arrives just days after it was announced that McIlroy was splitting from Stoll. News of the separation came after divorce petitions were filed in Florida court on Monday. The couple have been married for seven years and have a three-year-old daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy. McIlroy was spotted without his wedding ring during Tuesday’s practice, but appeared in a relaxed mood as he joked with friends and caddy Harry Diamond.
He heads into this week’s PGA Championship in fine form after winning the Wells Fargo Championship last week, but his major drought dates back to 2014. McIlroy held his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, which began with a warning not to talk about his personal life.
During the brief press conference, which lasted just over eight minutes, a reporter asked McIlroy what he was doing “personally” ahead of the tournament. “I’m ready to play this week,” said McIlroy, who will play alongside Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose in the first two rounds.
He added: “I’ve come so far that I’ve already had success.”
McIlroy’s last big success came 10 years ago at the same venue as this week’s PGA Championship. Recalling that Valhalla victory, McIlroy said: “Sometimes it’s hard for me to remember what I did yesterday. When I look back, it’s hard to find those memories and feelings. For me it’s all about confidence and momentum and keeping it up.”
