Scotland’s Bob McIntyre wins his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open

Europe’s Ryder Cup hero Bob McIntyre has become a PGA Tour winner in his first season after a gutsy win at the RBC Canadian Open.
Scotland’s Bob McIntyre won his first PGA Tour title with a close victory at the RBC Canadian Open. The victory was made even sweeter for McIntyre, 27, because his father Dougie was serving as a substitute caddy at Hamilton Golf & Country Club this week.
McIntyre shot a 2-under 68 to finish at 16 under par and earn a narrow victory over playing partner Ben Griffin, who posted a solid 65. The European Ryder Cup hero earned a card in the DP World Tour Rankings for 2023 and is playing his first full season on the PGA Tour.
MacIntyre’s win was his 45th PGA Tour appearance and third of his career, and also marked his second DP World Tour title. MacIntyre became just the sixth Scotsman in the modern era to win a PGA Tour event. He will be ranked among the top 40 players in the world on Monday morning and will earn a huge first place prize of $1.7 million. Macintyre also makes exemption from PGA TOUR until the end of 2026.

As his father stood by his side, an emotional McIntyre told CBS’ Amanda Balionis:

“I’m honestly speechless. This is everything to me and my family, my girlfriend, my team. I can’t believe I did that to him while he was being fired. I cry with joy, but I also laugh because I never thought I’d be able to do it.

“I was down at the end, and my dad made sure I stayed focused and made sure I swung smoothly. Mentally I was unhinged and just wanted to win this for my dad. He’s the guy that taught me how to play golf and I can’t believe I did it with him on the bag.

“Amazing. I am a plant -based cutter, not a shopping cart. Last Saturday, I called last Saturday, I sat on the sofa at 8 p.m. Saturday. I was busy with work, but I was on an 8am flight the next morning, and it was just amazing.”

Before the final round, McIntyre said his father’s encouragement had helped him take a four-stroke lead heading into the final round.

McIntyre confirmed he was heading home to Oban, Scotland, to enjoy the celebrations. The Scotsman has qualified for next week’s Memorial Tournament by winning his first PGA Tour title if he answers his delayed invitation to Muirfield Village.
