Scottie Scheffler’s 12th career PGA Tour victory wasn’t the only headline to come from Sunday’s final round at the Travelers Championship.
Scheffler, as well as playing partners Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia, were met on the 18th green at TPC River Highlands this afternoon by a group of environmental activists. Play was suspended briefly as police detained the protestors, who were spotted spraying a paint-like substance on the green.
After the round, Bhatia – who finished T5 and four shots behind Scheffler – opened up about the wild ending and admitted to being “scared” for his life on the 18th green.
“I mean, I was scared for my life,” Bhatia said. “I didn’t really know what was happening… all of a sudden four or five people come out running on the green.”
Bhatia also credited law enforcement for their swift response to the incident.
“Thankfully cops were there and kept us safe,” Bhatia continued.
According to protesters were part of climate activism group, Extinction Rebellion.
“I was in shock and my heart rate was high,” Bhatia said. “It got low and then once that kind of happened I was just freaked out, I just tried get over where everyone was.”
Scheffler (-22), who earned his sixth win of the current PGA Tour season, defeated Tom Kim on the first playoff hole.
